This festival is the largest ocean fishing derby on the West Coast where hundreds of fishermen flock to Brookings every Labor Day weekend for their try at a "trophy Chinook Salmon".
Fishermen and their families come from all over the state of Oregon and some from other states as far away as New York and as close as Idaho. As many as 450 fishermen board their boats in hopes of winning the $6,000 dollar prize for the biggest salmon and a chance to win other cash awards of $10,000 plus several thousand dollars worth of prizes such as rods and reels, crab pots, and numerous other fishing gear.

Oregon's southernmost Port is located on the Pacific Ocean a few miles north of the Oregon-California border; an area known for its mild climate and natural beauty. Located at the mouth of the Chetco River, it has one of the safest entries to the ocean on the west coast. It's a sportsman's paradise and a photographer's dream. Year round ocean fishing for snapper, salmon, and albacore tuna as well as three world class rivers within minutes provide outstanding angling and recreational boating. The Port is a working Port with a fleet of commercial vessels that fish for Dungeness crab, tuna, snapper and shrimp. These catches are offloaded daily on our commercial dock systems and are an important element of our overall economy.
The Port of Brookings-Harbor serves as a central point for some of the finest fishing in the country. Using the safest bar on the west coast, fishermen take their boat out for Snapper, Ling Cod, Halibut, Salmon, Albacore Tuna and, Dungeness Crab almost year round. We have a permanent Coast Guard facility located on the mouth of the Chetco River, assuring the safety of all water crafts.
